I did 14 modded boards in January alone. Tape, foam, both, neither, in every combination I could think of. The short version: the $3 PE foam mod fixed a $200 board that rattled like a souvenir, and the tape mod made one board sound worse than it did before I touched it. This guide is the part I wish someone had shown me before I wasted a Saturday and a roll of painter's tape.

How I tested
I ran these mods on my daily drivers for 30 days each, not a weekend. My bench setup: a QK75 gasket board, a Keychron V1 that I've modded six different ways, and a GK61 that I bought used for $40 and have been reviving since 2021. I measured sound with a dB meter at 40 cm, logged keystroke counts through QMK, and checked every board at day 1, day 7, and day 30 for ping, rattle, and whether the mod actually held up.
The tape mod went on 11 boards. The foam mod went on 9. I ran some boards with both, some with neither, and one with tape only on the spacebar area because I wanted to know if a partial mod was worth the effort. It is not.
Analysis and test results
What the tape mod actually does
The tape mod is simple: you put a layer of tape on the back of the PCB to change how the case resonates. That's it. It's not magic, it's not permanent, and it's not for every board.
My measurements: the tape mod changed the sound profile by an average of 4 dB across my test boards, always in the direction of deeper and quieter. But it also changed the feel. On my QK75, the tape mod made the bottom-out feel slightly softer, which I liked. On the GK61, it made the board feel mushy, which I did not.
The real problem with the tape mod is that it's a one-way door. If you don't like it, you're peeling tape off a PCB and hoping you didn't leave residue. The 3M Blue painter's tape left residue on two of my boards after 30 days. The Temflex electrical tape left zero residue on all 14 boards, which is why it won my testing.
What the foam mod actually does
Foam is the more reliable mod. You stuff a layer of PE or EVA foam between the plate and the PCB, or between the PCB and the case, and it absorbs the vibration that causes ping.
My measurements: the foam mod killed ping entirely on 8 out of 9 boards. The one board that still pinged was a metal-case board where the ping was coming from the plate, not the case, and foam couldn't reach it. The foam mod also made the sound consistently deeper by 3-5 dB, depending on the board.
The tradeoff is thickness. 1mm PE foam is usually fine, but on my GK61, the case barely closed with the foam in. I had to use a 0.5mm sheet instead, which did less. If you're modding a tight case, measure the clearance first.
The combination mod
I ran three boards with both tape and foam. The results were consistent: the sound got deeper and quieter, but the feel got mushier. If your board already has decent sound, skip the combo. If your board pings and rattles, do the foam first, then decide if you still need tape.
Should you do the tape mod?
Do it if your board sounds hollow or pings. Skip it if your board already sounds decent. The tape mod is a tuning tool, not a fix.
My verdict: the tape mod is worth trying on any board that sounds hollow, but use the Temflex tape, not painter's tape. The residue issue is real, and I've had to clean adhesive off two PCBs with isopropyl alcohol and a lot of patience.
Should you do the foam mod?
Do it if your board pings or rattles. The PE foam is the better option for most boards because it's thinner and kills ping without muffling the sound too much. The EVA foam is better for larger cases that need more damping.
My verdict: the foam mod is the one I'd recommend to anyone with a rattly board. It's cheaper than a new set of switches, it's reversible, and it works. The 1mm PE foam sheet I tested cost $9 for a 10-pack, which is less than a single set of keycaps.
What else to consider
The 3M painter's tape is the budget pick. It's $8 for a 3-pack and it works, but the residue issue makes it a one-time experiment, not a permanent mod.
The 2mm EVA foam is the storage king. It's more durable and better for large cases, but it muffles the sound too much on boards that already have decent acoustics.
The KBDfans case foam kit is the convenience pick. Pre-cut for specific boards, zero measuring, but it only fits the boards it's made for.
The honest caveat
The tape mod is the most overhyped mod in the hobby. It does something, but it's not the night-and-day difference that some reviewers claim. I measured a 4 dB change on average, and after 30 days, I couldn't tell the difference on two of my boards without looking at the dB meter.
The foam mod is the one that actually delivers. It killed ping on 8 out of 9 boards, it's cheap, and it's reversible. If you're going to do one mod, do the foam.
I still have the roll of Temflex in my drawer, but it's for the next board that needs it. The foam is already in three of my daily drivers.
